The Top 3 Hair Loss Apps to Regrow Your Hair

Hair loss is a problem that affects millions of people globally—both men and women. As the struggle with androgenic alopecia and other forms of hair loss becomes increasingly prevalent, the demand for a solution to hair loss is on the rise. While there are multiple telehealth platforms which deliver direct to your door to make consultations and treatment easy, there is a comparatively limited number of apps to help you battle hair loss. This article aims to guide you through the best hair loss apps to help you regrow your hair.

Why should you use a hair loss app?

But before we dive into our list, it's worth considering why you should use an app for hair loss. Is it not enough to go to your doctor and take the finasteride and minoxidil they give you? To put it simply, yes that could be enough for you. But you could also be missing out on significant benefits from using an app for hair loss. Here are three compelling reasons why you should use a hair loss app:

1. Upload Photos + Monitor your Progress

While you can take photos with your camera app and store them in your photos app, it's just not ideal. Having a dedicated app for hair loss which allows for easy photo upload means you have all of your photos in one place, and you don't need to worry about photos of your hairline showing up when showing someone pictures in your photo gallery.

Plus, a great hair loss app will have progress tracking features which don't exist in your phone's photo gallery. A feature we find find most value is side-by-side comparisons. Most people who notice their hair loss will have lost 20% or more of their follicles before they have realized. Go check out our article which outlines how to tell if you're balding and the importance of consistent photos. And in the future, it would great to see quantitative metrics to help determine whether one is growing or losing hair.

2. Manage Treatments + Reminders

In most scenarios, patients will begin hair loss treatments with a single medication. It could be finasteride or it could be minoxidil. As a patient, it's important to take control of your hair regrowth journey and track what treatments you're taking. Otherwise, how will you be able to correlate your regrowth progress or side effects to a particular treatment?

A great hair loss app will make it easy for patients to note the start and end date of treatments, log notes, and schedule treatment reminders.

3. Educate Yourself + Connect with Professionals

A third critical aspect of apps for hair restoration is education. As a community we are battling androgenic alopecia, but what sources can we trust to share honest, scientific information about the latest treatments, innovation, and news in hair loss? And who can we go to in the event we want a second opinion on our current treatment stack?

These are all aspects which we value as consumers looking at hair loss apps.

What makes an app effective for battling hair loss?

Since we've discussed what makes a great hair loss app, let's outline the specific criteria we've used to rank the best hair loss apps.

1. Photo Upload
2. Treatment Management
3. Schedule Reminders
4. Education + Talk to Doctors
5. Privacy

The Best Hair Loss Apps

After thoroughly testing the hair loss apps available on iOS and Android, here are our top picks:

Hairly: A Newbie Making Waves

Hairly: Fight Hair Loss

Overview

Hairly is a new, 100% free app available on iOS and Android. While Hairly is a new app, it could offer the strongest feature set out of the other players on the market. Hairly aims to be your hair loss digital assistant by offering a full suite of services for hair restoration including treatment management, photo management, progress tracking, and education.

Photo Upload: 4/5

The Hairly app does a great job allowing users to upload photos, tag photos by angle, and then crop them to ensure consistency. It scores 4 out of 5 as it could improve by educating users on how to take photos with consistent angles and lighting. In the future, a solution to standardize or auto-crop photos would be helpful.

Treatment Management: 4/5

It is straightforward and easy to manage treatments on the Hairly app. Users have the option to add, edit, and delete treatments including the ability to add start and end dates. The ability to add notes to document side effects or growth progress is much appreciated; However, there's room for improvement as it does not have a calendar system or option for users to note days they did or did not take their treatment. This feature could be beneficial for those who find it hard to remember their medication schedules.

Schedule Reminders: 3/5

Hairly offers reminders on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis to encourage users to check-in and track their progress. The limitation here is that you can't set up multiple reminders for different treatments, which could be a useful feature for those who have trouble remembering to take medication.

Education + Talk to Doctors: 3/5

The Hairly app includes educational articles and information on various hair loss topics. Additionally, they offer product pages for common, generic hair loss treatments including finasteride, minoxidil, and more. These product pages include overviews, research studies, information on how to use the treatments, and where to buy them.

While Hairly offers top notch product information and education, its ability to connect patients with doctors falls short. Hairly allows users to connect with a doctor, but does not allow the user to choose a specific clinic or communicate directly in the app.

Track Progress: 5/5

Hairly's flagship feature is its progress tracking. The ability to search and filter across different photo angles and set pictures side-by-side to track progress is the best we have seen on the market. This feature is especially valuable because it allows users to identify whether their treatments are working or if they need to make adjustments.

Privacy: 5/5

Hairly receives a 5/5 in its commitment to user privacy by ensuring that user data is secure and never sold or shared without consent of the user.

iHairium: An App to Connect with Doctors

iHairium: AI Hair Loss Helper

Overview

iHairium is an app to help connect hair loss patients with trichologists or hair transplant clinics. The app has two subscription tiers from $99 to $199 per month which inlclude diagnostics, product recommendations, and a connection with a clinic. For those who are looking for a way to diagnose their hair loss and find a clinic, it could be a good fit, but it lacks in self-service management of hair loss such as treatment management and progress tracking.

Photo Upload: 2/5

iHairium receives a two stars out of five on uploading photos because the photo upload feature only exists for users receiving a free initial diagnostic or paid diagnostic from a doctor. Additionally, users do not have the ability to tag photos with various angles, or reference previous photos.

Treatment Management: N/A

While iHairium does have a large catalog of hair products, there is no treatment management solution.

Schedule Reminders: 3/5

iHairium has a tasks screen to schedule reminders. These tasks are generic in nature though and include odd tasks like "Go for a walk" or "Write down your main goal for the day". While users can add a task for the iHairium team to create, it is odd that specific tasks cannot be added for treatments other than "iHairium recommended shampoo".

Education + Talk to Doctors: 5/5

Where iHairium thrives is in its ability to connect patients with doctors. iHairium has a roster of clinics it partners with and will perform an AI-based initial diagnostic to understand a patient's goals and current state, and then pair them with a clinic for a fee. One thing we found weird was that the initial diagnostic one receives for free assumes the user wants a hair transplant.

Track Progress: N/A

iHairium does not offer progress tracking features for users to track hair loss over time.

Privacy: 5/5

While iHairium does charge for its subscriptions and transfers patient data to partnered clinics, they assure users their data will not be transferred without user consent.

Fight Hair Loss by GROW

Fight Hair Loss by Grow

The app has two subscription tiers from $99 to $199 per month which inlclude diagnostics, product recommendations, and a connection with a clinic. Photo Upload: 3/5

GROW offers an easy-to-use upload feature and categorize uploads by photo angle. Where it falls short is an inability to bulk upload old photos. Additionally, a feature to standardize photo angles or educate users on how to take consistent photos would bring it up to a 5/5.

Treatment Management: 4/5

GROW offers an intuitive and easy to use treatment manage system. For users who struggle to remember when they need to take treatments, GROW makes it easy to set reminders and schedules. Where treatment management falls short is that it's not possible to mark a start or end date for a treatment.

Schedule Reminders: 5/5

The reminder system from GROW is the best we have used. Immediately upon add

Education + Talk to Doctors: 3/5

Where iHairium thrives is in its ability to connect patients with doctors. iHairium has a roster of clinics it partners with and will perform an AI-based initial diagnostic to understand a patient's goals and current state, and then pair them with a clinic for a fee.

Track Progress: 3/5

Fight Hair Loss by GROW currently offers progress tracking with a slider with filters by photo angle. Although we could see a compare button, we weren't able to make it work. It would also be nice to see a list view of all picture history which does not exist.

Privacy: 4/5

According to the App Store, GROW does not store any user data which is fantastic for those who are privacy focused and do not want their photos available from any device with their login. However, when using the app we noticed that a prompt appeared requesting feedback on the experience. Presumably this prompt appears and the response is being logged. This raises questions about whether the app collects data or not.
